The show is a remake of a very popular Tamil serial, Thirumathi Selvam, of which the producer of the show Ekta Kapoor has acquired copyrights. The show started on June 1, 2009.
The story is based in Dombivali,a suburb near the Indian city of Mumbai. It is a story of a girl, Archana, who, though is not highly educated but handles the whole house work impeccably. Every one is dependant on her, but, except for her brother and parents, no one really values her importance.
Her mother has a sole aim of getting a good, well educated boy drawing a good salary for Archana. Because of this Archana’s marriage plans have always been full of obstacles. Simultaneously runs the story of Maanav, a poor mechanic, who becomes besotted by Archana on the first sight by Destiny and circumstances. He is in financial as well as family problems only due to his evil minded mother and brother. Like the female protagonist, Maanav also leaves studies due to family problems. Maanav's father is a failed stage actor and a drunkard. Archana gets a marriage proposal from a rich, well educated guy who likes her. The propasal is accepted by both sides and Manav is sad and hopeless. Archana's sister-in-law's brother plans against Archana because he feels that she was behind the fall of his marriage. He proves to Satish (the guy that Archana is set to get married to) that Archana is a prostitute. The marriage breaks off, but ends up bringing Manav in the good books of the family when he saves Archana at the brothel and also stops her dad from committing suicide. When the truth about the miscreants comes out, Sulochana, Archana's mother vows in front of Ajit and Rasika, his mom, that she will get Archana married to a well educated, rich guy.
The family consider Manav for Archana. But Manjusha and her mom, this time create misunderstandings that lead everyone to think that Manav is a well earning mechanical engineer. The marriage is set. Manav on the other hand thinks that they have accepted him knowing what he is. The truth finally breaks open at the wedding when Rasika laughs at Sulochana's big words. Shattered, Sulochana cancels the bidaai, and refuses to let Archana go with her newly married husband. Manav is heartbroken.
This is where the actual story kickstarts, as two people who first meet and are then separated by destiny, act as support systems to each other and together face the hurdles of life. This is the story of their 'pavitra rishta'.
